Instructions On How To Access The Roland Sound Bank Files Using An IBM Compatible Computer. About the Library Roland Corporation U.S. has made the original Sound Bank (S-50, S-550, S-330 and W-30 samplers) and the S-770 floppy disk library available for downloading from this on-line service. These disks were available from Roland dealers when these digital samplers were current products in our line. However over the years dealers became unable to stock the library for customers to come in and copy the disks they wanted any longer. In order to continue servicing our customers we are making these disks available to various on-line services for downloading. All of the files which are available here are created using the SDISK program, which is a IBM DOS program. The SDISK image files are then compressed with PkZip, which is a common file compression utility for DOS. The library is divided into three sections. The first section is RSB501-508, the original S-50 library. These disks when uncompressed and converted to sampler disks can be used with the S-50, S-550, S-330 and W-30 samplers. If you are using a S-550, S-330 or W-30 sampler you can not directly load the patches. You will need to use the Convert Load function on these samplers first to read the original S-50 disk. Some of the S-50 disks for this library were convert loaded on a S-550 or were recovered from the S-550 library because the original S-50 disks were missing from the archive. If you have a S-50 and cannot read the disk, this is because this is a converted disk. There is a utility disk that should accompany this library that can convert S-550 disks into the S-50, it is the S-50 SYS-505 disk. The compressed file name is SYS505.ZIP. Sorry for the inconvenience of having to convert some of these disks, but we wanted to be able to include the entire library. The original S-50 disks are not able to be directly convert loaded into the S-770, S-750, DJ-70 or the S-760 because the different data format of the S-50 disks. You will need to convert load these disks on a S-550, S-330 or W-30 and save the sounds in their native format in order to convert load over the original S-50 disk to a 700 Series sampler. The Second section is the RSB-5501-5506, which was the S-550 and W-30 library. These files are similar to the RSB library are created with SDISK and compressed with PkZip. To use these files with a S-50 you will need the SYS-505 system disk to convert them for use with the S-50. These files can also be convert loaded into the S-770,S-750,S-760 and DJ-70. The third section is the L701-711 library. This is the floppy disk library for the S-770/750, which will also work for the DJ-70 and the S-760 samplers. Because these are in a different data format than the S-550, these disks are not compatible with samplers that are not in the 700 Series. To get an idea of how many sounds are in the Sound Bank see the Sound Bank Library text file, which has the complete listing of sounds in the Sound Bank. How to create a Roland disk from the file you downloaded. 1)Download the SDISK program file SDISK.ZIP. Use a PkUnzip utility to uncompress the program file. These types of utilities are available from Compuserve, Internet, America On-line and computer bulletin boards if you don't already have this on your computer. Uncompress the file according to the instructions that accompany the program. 1) Select the Sound Bank file you want from this service. After downloading the file that you want. You will need to decompress the file the same way that you did with the SDISK.ZIP file. The new file name that is created after decompressing the ZIP file should be for example: RSB506_1.Out. 2) Put the uncompressed file into the same directory that the SDISK program is in. 3) From DOS or Windows start the program. In Windows you double click on SDISK.EXE and the program will start. In DOS type the name SDISK on the command line and press Return and the program will start. 4) Type in D (command D= Details) and press return. 5) Type in the file name (example: RSB506_1.Out) and press return. 6) The default drive to create the disk on is A:: if you want to use another floppy drive, type in the letter that refers to it and press return. 7) You have now set up the program to create a sampler disk in the disk drive of your computer.
